Red Tony Lama Boots - I know I’ve really gone off the deep end with these cowboy boots. Who do I think I am to be able to pull these off? I first saw a red pair of Tony Lama’s while I was down in Nashville, TN tossing back Maker’s at Robert’s Western World (p.s. go there!) There were a few pairs displayed on their wall, but they weren’t for sale. The other problem was that 99% of these red boots are made for ladies (oops!) Luckily I tracked down a pair of their menswear counterparts on eBay and immediately bid. I think subliminally I wanted a pair of red boots after watching Buffalo 66. Who knows. Either way, I’m stoked on these bad boys.
Have I told you how much I love the Cocteau Twins lately?
Dennis Wilson, 1977.
Porcelain Raft’s upcoming LP “Strange Weekend” drops January 24th via Secretly Canadian but you can stream it now at Hype Machine. Make sure to check out album closer “The Way In”, it’s a glimmering stunner of a track.
The Prisonaires - Just Walking in the Rain. The single that put many consider to have put Sun Studios on the map, this song was recorded by a group of incarcerated gentleman from Tennessee State Penitentiary including lead singer and co-writer Johnny Bragg. The governor liked them so much he gave them all pardons.
Chris Bell - You and Your Sister (1978) - The only solo album from Big Star’s Chris Bell “I Am the Cosmos” is a musical snapshot of one of the most underrated songwriters around. The photo work (done by Chris’ brother David) is some of my favorite as well. Spanning paranoid, bummer glam to glimmering folk tracks (such as the one posted above) “I Am the Cosmos” is essential listening for fans of Big Star or strange but lovely tunes in general.
Vintage Wrangler Jacket - I picked up a vintage denim jacket in Cambridge, MA recently and it has been my go-to all fall long. Actually, this winter has been (freakishly) mild and I have been able to rock it through December as well. It’s super comfy, versatile, great for layering and has W’s on the breast pockets. For Will (my name) of course. I’ve been wearing it enough that my sister has named it. She calls it my “Favre.” Find the perfect one for you at eBay.
You And Me - Penny And The Quarters, I’ve been DJing a lot more recently and even though this song has no backbeat to speak of I’ve been playing it out a ton. People either a) know it (mostly from the movie Blue Valentine like me), love it and let me know or b) ask what it is. An absolute gem.
